Mark Zuckerberg ‘hits the jackpot’ after Meta’s fate-changing move: Earns $185 million in 1 month, Wall Street rallies in support Meta uses 1.1 billion images to train AI, possibly including your own images Meta’s AI Director: NVIDIA is supplying weapons for the AI battle Facebook co-founder once sued Mark Zuckerberg: Singapore’s richest billionaire turns $15,000 investment into over $19 billion in assets Once shunned by the world for virtual reality, losing $50 billion, Mark Zuckerberg’s spectacular turnaround is earning everyone’s respect Meta is becoming increasingly serious about securing its position as the arms race in AI is escalating.

Specifically, on Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta plans to build its own common artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is artificial intelligence that meets or surpasses human intelligence in most fields. He even mentioned that the company will then plan to open it up entirely for developers.

In a video posted on Meta’s Threads social network, Zuckerberg stated that building the best AI for chatbots, creators, and businesses requires advancements in AI in all aspects. He said, “Clearly, the next generation of services requires building comprehensive common intelligence.”

He added in a post on Threads: “Our long-term vision is to build common intelligence with open source responsibly and provide this AI widely for everyone to benefit.”

To handle this processing power, Zuckerberg mentioned that Meta is on track to have around 350,000 Nvidia AI chips by the end of this year. The company also plans to expand and merge its two large AI research groups – called FAIR and GenAI – together to expedite the company’s work.

Mark stated that he believes the company’s vision of AI and the metaverse has a connection.

“By the end of this decade, I think many people will regularly talk to AI all day using smart glasses, much like what we are building with Ray Ban Meta.”

Meta’s latest Ray Ban glasses are supported by artificial intelligence and allow users to make calls, send messages, and record videos without using their hands.

Zuckerberg’s latest announcement is one of the biggest commitments to double down on artificial general intelligence. Major technology companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, continue to share new AI tools and visions as the arms race in AI is increasing and innovating. However, some skeptics of the technology have shared concerns that large companies and new players like OpenAI may unintentionally create unintended consequences with these revolutionary products.

Earlier this year, Zuckerberg stated that Meta is creating a new “top-tier product group” to “accelerate” the company’s work on AI tools. Since then, Meta has released tools and information to help users understand how AI affects what they see on their apps.

Dipanjan Chatterjee, an analyst at Forrester Research, said the company’s major shift towards AI is not surprising as the industry seizes the opportunity of AI. However, it is noteworthy that Meta recently rebranded itself to focus entirely on its metaverse concept.

He said, “The saying ‘every company is now a tech company’ has evolved into ‘every company is now an AI company.’ It’s clear that interest in the metaverse has significantly diminished since Facebook became Meta, so it’s not surprising that the company has shifted to AI to bring back a part of its shine.”
