Oscar Nominations 2024: Justine Triet Makes History as 8th Woman Ever Nominated for Best Director

Among the five filmmakers nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director this year, Justine Triet stands out as the only woman in the category. The director of “Anatomy of a Fall” becomes the eighth woman ever to receive a Best Director nomination from the Academy.

Who is Justine Triet? The French filmmaker is not only the director but also the writer of the film, which secured five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Triet gained recognition for her 2019 film “Sybil,” which garnered attention at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Anatomy of a Fall” is a French-language film that revolves around a writer facing trial for her husband’s murder. The film earned four Golden Globe nominations, winning in the categories of Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. Triet also received the Palme d’Or, the highest prize at the Cannes Film Festival, for her work on the film.

At 45, Triet competes for the Best Director Oscar alongside Martin Scorsese for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Jonathan Glazer for “The Zone of Interest,” Yorgos Lanthimos for “Poor Things,” and Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer.”

Triet has collaborated on film projects with her husband, Arthur Harari, including “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Sybil.” They would share the award for Best Original Screenplay if successful.

Lina Wertmüller made history as the first woman nominated in the category 47 years after the Oscars began, with another 32 years passing before Kathryn Bigelow secured a nomination and emerged victorious.
