Embarking on the beautiful journey of pregnancy often prompts the desire to look and feel as beautiful as possible. However, navigating the realm of makeup during this time can be challenging due to potential skin changes and concerns about ingredient safety. Dr. Tina Alster, board-certified dermatologist and founder of The A Method, emphasizes the need for caution with product ingredients during pregnancy, as hormonal shifts can lead to unpredictable changes in skin behavior.
While all FDA-approved makeup is generally considered safe during pregnancy, it’s essential to be mindful of specific ingredients that may not be well-tolerated by the changing skin. Dr. Sam Ellis, a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, suggests avoiding alcohol, fragrance, heavier foundation, and powders that might exacerbate breakouts. Additionally, experts recommend steering clear of phthalates, formaldehyde, retinol or vitamin A, parabens, aluminum, talc, dibutyl phthalate, and concentrated essential oils.
To select pregnancy-safe makeup, focus on noncomedogenic labels, indicating products that won’t clog pores, especially important during pregnancy when hormonal changes may increase skin oiliness and acne. Niacinamide, with its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to even out skin tone, is a recommended ingredient in concealers and foundations. Other beneficial ingredients include natural botanicals like squalene, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and beeswax.
Hypoallergenic products, formulated to minimize allergic reactions, are wise choices during pregnancy, provided they are also fragrance-free. Opting for makeup labeled “NAFE safe” (containing no denatured alcohol, fragrance, or essential oils) ensures a safer choice.
Sun protection remains crucial during pregnancy, with a preference for physical sunscreens that reflect ultraviolet light over chemical options. Despite concerns, modern makeup ingredients are not absorbed systemically, and there is no evidence suggesting harm to a developing fetus.
