In a remarkable display during Monday’s spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates’ prospect Termarr Johnson achieved a feat that hasn’t been seen in the last 10 years of spring training history.
Johnson, just a teenager, showcased his exceptional talent by smashing two home runs, marking the first time a teenager has accomplished such a feat in a spring training game in a decade.
As reported by @YoungBucsPIT on social media:
“Yesterday, Termarr Johnson became the first teenager to hit 2 home runs in a single Spring Training game since Carlos Correa in 2014”
Entering the game as a replacement, Johnson went 2-for-2 with the two home runs and three RBI, with his impressive shots coming in the seventh and ninth innings.
Selected in the first round of the 2022 draft by the Pirates, Johnson is currently ranked as the No. 44 prospect in all of baseball for the 2024 season.
According to his MLB.com prospect profile, Johnson is lauded for his remarkable hand-eye coordination, swing decisions, and contact rates. Despite initial concerns about his high strikeout rate at the start of the 2023 season, Johnson’s performance improved significantly as he adapted to professional play, showcasing his immense power potential and impressive batting skills.
While initially a shortstop as an amateur, Johnson has transitioned smoothly to second base in his professional career, displaying decent range, hands, and arm strength. With his exceptional batting prowess and promising future, Johnson is poised to make a significant impact in the major leagues, provided he stays healthy and continues to develop his skills. In 2023, across multiple A-ball levels, he demonstrated his power by hitting a total of 18 home runs.
