LOOK OF THE WEEK: KIM KARDASHIAN’S DEBUT AS BALENCIAGA AMBASSADOR IN ‘PANTALEGGINGS’

Kim Kardashian takes center stage in Balenciaga’s new “Closet Campaign,” featuring photos captured within her personal closet. The Skims founder, recently announced as Balenciaga’s official brand ambassador, showcases the return of the label’s iconic Le City oversized leather bag, reminiscent of the 2000s era when supermodel Kate Moss made it a fashion staple.

Known for her collaborations with Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, Kim Kardashian has been a muse for the brand, donning everything from mobility-limiting yellow caution tape to head-to-toe black fabric. However, her inaugural appearance as an official ambassador embraces a classic Kimenciaga silhouette – a seamless tube top paired with ‘pantaleggings,’ aligning seamlessly with her own shapewear empire’s aesthetic.

Photographed by Inez and Vinoodh, the “Closet Campaign” features various celebrities, including actor and socialite Nicola Peltz sporting a Regina George-worthy pink tracksuit, and model Paloma Elsesser, showcasing the new Le City silhouettes and other signature Balenciaga bags in luxurious closets. Kardashian is captured in her expansive handbag closet, surrounded by her collection of nearly 130 Balenciaga bags.

While the “Closet Campaign” serves as a soft launch for the new partnership, it is generating considerable buzz. As the Met Gala approaches in May, Kardashian and Demna are expected to elevate the fashion theatrics, promising a more extravagant display.

Kardashian had previously distanced herself from Balenciaga in 2022 after a controversial holiday campaign, “Toy Stories,” faced accusations of sexualizing children. The campaign featured young children with Balenciaga gifts, including plush bags designed as teddy bears in goth outfits and BDSM-inspired accessories. Following the controversy, Balenciaga issued an apology, pulled the campaign, and Kardashian expressed her concerns on social media, stating she was “re-evaluating” her relationship with the house.

In December, over a year after the backlash, Kardashian signaled her return to Balenciaga by attending the Los Angeles runway show. As part of her ambassador announcement, Kardashian emphasized the fashion house’s commitment to modernity, craftsmanship, and innovative design under Demna, highlighting the enduring relationship built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to ethical practices.
