French designer Mathieu Lehanneur revealed the sleek and sophisticated design of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Torch. Drawing inspiration from the themes of equality, water, and peacefulness, Lehanneur aimed for perfect symmetry, symbolizing equality, and simplicity akin to a hyphen and the fluidity of a flame.
Weighing 3.3 pounds, the champagne-colored torch features a ripple effect, evoking the movement of water. Manufactured by ArcelorMittal, 2,000 torches will be crafted from 100% recycled steel, reducing the production impact. This torch makes history as the first to be used for both the Olympics and Paralympics, aligning with the organizing committee’s goal to bridge the gap between the two events.
Paris 2024’s president, Tony Estanguet, sees the torch design as a means to strengthen the connection between the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Unlike past designs, this torch prioritizes sustainability with its recycled steel and reduced production quantity.
The Olympic torch, a symbol of the host country, has evolved over the years, reflecting the sleek architecture of iconic structures and embracing cultural symbolism. Mathieu Lehanneur, renowned for his work in furniture and accessories, brings his artistic touch to the torch, adding to a legacy of distinguished designers contributing to Olympic tradition.
The torch’s journey begins in Olympia, where it is ignited using sunlight reflected off a parabolic mirror, symbolizing the power of the Greek god Apollo. Passing through the hands of 10,000 torchbearers from Greece to France, the flame is set to reach the Olympic cauldron in Paris on July 26, 2024, staying lit until the closing ceremony two weeks later. After extinguishment, the flame will be reignited for the Paralympics, scheduled from August 28 to September 8.
As the Paris Olympics prepares for a grand celebration, luxury conglomerate LVMH has joined the sponsorship, with brands like Chaumet, Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Moët Hennessy contributing to the prestigious event.
