Aaron Judge, the powerhouse outfielder for the New York Yankees, recently opened up about the lasting effects of an injury sustained last year. During an incident at Dodger Stadium, Judge tore a ligament in his right big toe, forcing him to sit out for 42 games. The absence of the then-reigning MVP significantly impacted the team’s performance, as they struggled notably without his presence on the field.
Upon returning from the injury, Judge faced ongoing challenges, evident in his performance. Despite maintaining impressive statistics in walks and home runs, his batting average dropped to .218 in the initial 49 games post-injury. Additionally, he found himself frequently designated as a designated hitter (DH) and had to wear added protection on his cleats. However, towards the end of the season, Judge demonstrated resilience by finishing his last eight games with a notable batting average of .407 and a remarkable OPS of 1.654.
The repercussions of Judge’s injury extended beyond his personal performance, impacting the team’s overall standing. During a stretch from June 6 to Aug. 27, the Yankees struggled immensely, marking their worst prolonged performance in recent memory. Although they narrowly maintained a winning record for the season, the postseason eluded them for the first time since 2016.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Judge expressed the need for ongoing vigilance regarding his toe injury. In his first media appearance of spring training, he emphasized the necessity of “constant maintenance” for the foreseeable future. Given his history of injuries, including multiple instances of missing 30-plus games, Judge recognizes the importance of proactive injury management to prevent flare-ups.
Despite the challenges posed by his injury, Judge’s talent and impact on the field remain undeniable. His remarkable performance throughout his career, characterized by numerous accolades and record-breaking achievements, solidify his status as one of the premier players in baseball. However, the acknowledgment of the need for ongoing maintenance underscores the importance of prioritizing health and longevity in his career trajectory. As Judge continues to navigate his professional journey, his dedication to injury management serves as a testament to his commitment to peak performance and sustained success.
