As anticipation builds for the upcoming baseball season, one storyline to watch closely is the projected performance of Kansas City Royals’ standout shortstop, Bobby Witt Jr. Fangraphs’ Steamer projections suggest that Witt is on the cusp of achieving something unprecedented in baseball history.
Sarah Langs of MLB.com highlights Witt’s remarkable trajectory:
Following an impressive rookie campaign in 2022, where Witt notched 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases, he elevated his game further in 2023, reaching 30 home runs and 49 stolen bases. Now, with projections hinting at another stellar season with 30 home runs and 42 stolen bases, Witt is poised to etch his name in the annals of baseball lore. Witt holds the distinction of being the sole player in MLB history to achieve at least 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases in each of his first two seasons. If he maintains this remarkable feat in his third season, he would be the first player ever to accomplish such a feat thrice. What’s more, Witt’s projected 30-30 season would mark a historic milestone, as no shortstop has achieved multiple 30-30 seasons in baseball history.
At just 23 years old, the Texas native has already left an indelible mark on the league, finishing seventh in the American League MVP voting last season and ranking fourth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2022. Throughout his career, Witt has maintained a solid .265 batting average with a .307 on-base percentage.
Despite the Royals’ last-place finish in 2023, the team is poised for a resurgence in the upcoming season. With the addition of seasoned veterans such as Adam Frazier and Hunter Renfroe on the position player front, along with Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Chris Stratton, and Will Smith bolstering the pitching roster, the Royals are gearing up for an exciting journey ahead.
