Oakland Athletics to Make MLB History with First Female Primary Play-by-Play Broadcaster In a groundbreaking move, NBC Sports California has appointed Jenny Cavnar as the primary play-by-play broadcaster for the Oakland Athletics in the upcoming 2024 season. Cavnar’s hiring marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first female primary play-by-play voice in MLB history.
Announced by NBC Sports California, Cavnar brings over two decades of media experience to the role, with 17 years dedicated to covering baseball. Her extensive background includes serving as a backup play-by-play announcer, pregame and postgame host, and reporter for regional TV coverage of the Colorado Rockies for the past 12 years. Notably, Cavnar made history in 2018 as the first woman in 25 years to call TV play-by-play for an MLB game, and in 2015, she became the first woman to provide analysis for a National League series on radio. Previously, she covered the San Diego Padres for nearly five years as a reporter and anchor.
Matt Murphy, President and General Manager of NBC Sports California and NBC Sports Bay Area, expressed excitement about Cavnar’s appointment, highlighting her remarkable talent and groundbreaking achievements throughout her career. Cavnar is poised to lead the A’s coverage, calling a majority of the team’s games in the upcoming season.
The Oakland Athletics, aiming to improve upon their performance from the previous year, finished last in the American League West in 2023, holding the worst record in Major League Baseball.
