According to a report by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the New York Yankees have reignited trade discussions with the Chicago White Sox, making a fresh offer for starting pitcher Dylan Cease.
This development follows concerns over the health of reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole, who recently underwent an MRI for an elbow issue. With uncertainty surrounding Cole’s availability for Opening Day, the Yankees are exploring options to bolster their pitching rotation.
Currently, the Yankees’ starting rotation relies on Carlos Rodón and Marcus Stroman, both of whom have had mixed performances in recent seasons. In contrast, Cease emerges as a prominent figure in trade talks, representing a significant asset on the market.
Cease, a 28-year-old right-hander, emerged as the AL Cy Young runner-up in 2022, boasting an impressive track record with 97 starts over the past three seasons. His statistics include a 3.54 ERA, 1.257 WHIP, and 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
Despite the White Sox designating Cease as their Opening Day starter, they remain open to discussing potential trades involving the talented pitcher. The Yankees’ latest offer for Cease reportedly excludes outfield prospect Spencer Jones, a key asset in their farm system.
It remains uncertain whether the White Sox will adjust their asking price for Cease, or if the Yankees will explore alternative options. With Opening Day approaching, the Yankees could also consider free agents Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery to address their pitching needs.
